Digital Lenses for Eyewear
Everyone is talking about the new digital lenses. What exactly does that mean? “Digital lenses” translates to lenses that were digitally processed using the latest state of the art technology. And … what does that mean to you? Let’s consider this analogy, music can be manually recorded onto a cassette tape or digitally uploaded to a CD. The quality of the CD is always better and as such one would automatically assume that a “digitally uploaded” lens would translate the same. Wrong. When it comes to quality digital lenses, it’s reliable processing and quality designs that are key. The truth is if you start with a sub-par design and have a sub-par process, the lens will be a sub-par digital lens. It is imperative that a quality design and quality processing are both in place along with precise measurements in order to reap the benefits of digitally processed lenses. Ok … so now that we have that, what makes a digital lens better? Digitally processed lenses can be manufactured to a higher degree of accuracy by utilizing computer code files which allow laboratories to process the lenses with 6x more precision. More detailed measurements such as frame tilt, vertex distance and degree of frame wrap can also be factored in to further optimize your prescription. Using these additional measurements allows for further customization of designs. These specifications are incorporated into the lenses at the point of surfacing (when the lenses are getting the Rx “put in”) opposed to traditional lenses, which do not allow for this level of customization. Consequently, the design and Rx can truly become even more specific to the wearer. So, really there is more than meets the eye (lol) when it comes to digital lenses … they can offer great benefits, but are not always necessary or better. It’s a little confusing, but just know it’s the lens design, an accurate Rx and precise measurements combined with “controlled digital processing,” which guarantee the best optics.
